
On November 12, 2009, Gregg Rafter, Associate Counsel at Boughton Law Corporation and member of the BC Aviation Council’s (“BCAC”)Board of DIrector's, emceed the Silver Wings Banquet. Mr. George Miller presented the prestigious BCAC Lifetime Achievement Award to Colonel (Ret’d) Robert Alvin White.
Colonel White was chosen to be a recipient of this award for his lifelong commitment to aviation and his dedication and passion for flying. Colonel White joined the then-Royal Canadian Air Force in 1948 and trained as a test pilot. In 1962 he was “loaned” to the United States Air Force to work on the NASA Space program. He was actively involved in both the Mercury and Gemini Space programs. In 1965 Colonel White returned to Canada and resumed his duties as a test pilot. In 1967 he led a Canadian assault on the Russian-held World’s Absolute Altitude Record. He piloted a modified CF104 Starfighter jet to an altitude of 100,110 feet, a Canadian record that stands to this day. In 1974, Colonel White was inducted into the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame. He retired from the Air Force after 31 years of service and returned to civilian life, where he enjoyed a second career with Noranda and Canadian Aircraft Products. In 1986, Colonel White retired from his successful military/business career to take up ski instructing and ski racing in Whistler, BC.
