Mr. Cooper has a broad range of experience in tax and, related experience in corporate finance, including senior financial positions with a multinational forest products company. In the tax area he has worked for: the Rulings Directorate of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), the Senior Technical and Policy Branch of the CRA in Ottawa; the Department of Finance involved in developing tax policy and federal income tax legislation; and as a senior tax associate at the Toronto office of a national law firm.
Mr. Cooper has spoken on tax related issues to professional groups such as the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Law Society of British Columbia and the Certified General and Accountants' Association of British Columbia. He is the author of numerous articles and has taught the Senior Tax Law and Policy course at Carleton University.
Mr. Cooper is the co-editor and founder of Executive TaxBriefs, a monthly tax update publication for owner/managers and their financial advisors, and the co-founder of Tax and Financial Strategies, a case study program for controllers and public practitioners.
He also advises clients on estate planning matters and represents clients in tax disputes with CRA and other taxation authorities.
Mr. Cooper is the co-founder of the Meritas Canada Tax group, comprised of tax and estate lawyers and Meritas Affiliates practicing from coast to coast.
